The New York City area is likely to receive upwards of two feet of snow over the next couple of days, and today's inspiration draws from that landscape.. the buckets of snow from a dark sky that make the city appear in to be not quite in daylight, but not quite night either.
Magritte's oil on canvas series "The Empire of Lights" articulates this eerie unknowing between night and day, past and future; both a dark and beautiful place to inhabit..in fact the scene later became inspiration for a scene in "The Exorcist". Magritte has aptly articulated this unknowing, and it's role in his work:
“My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question 'What does that mean'? It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable.”
